The open API approach to digital media publishing
What’s great about thePlatform’s API is that it gives customers access to all of the functionality in our services, allowing seamless integration of the service with applications they’ve already got. This is good stuff. People invest a lot in their content management systems, workflow applications, and process-specific tools, and no one wants to go backwards and try to rebake the cake. Because our solutions are web-services-based, our customers have easily integrated what they’re already using with what we’ve got.
For example, out of the gate, thePlatform offers upintegration via Java and C#, but TotalVid wanted to use SOAP to directly communicate with our system. So we let them – TotalVid uses SOAP calls and our APIs to meld their storefront capabilities with thePlatform’s media publishing system. They’ve also used our APIs to integrate with one of thePlatform’s Remote Media Processor they have on site, which they use to direct the storage of seldom-used and archived media. This has cut their storage costs by half, as they don’t have to keep that media on content delivery network servers anymore.
College Sports TV (CSTV) also needed thePlatform’s services to play well with third-party applications. Football fans hit CSTV’s site by the thousands on Saturday mornings. While they’re putting away several hundred bowls of Cocoa Puffs, they’re also consuming high-load files in short timeframes, creating a lot of traffic on CSTV’s site.
To get viewers registered and keep games flowing smoothly to them, CSTV requires a very stable, high-availabity system. Our open APIs allow integration of thePlatform’s user registration, e-commerce, and marketing promotion tools with the systems running CSTV’s site. They also use custom reports that pull data from thePlatform’s system for a view of the site’s performance, usage, and end-user preferences.
We don’t think anyone should ditch the tools that are working well for them. You can find out more about this philosophy in our Open Approach white paper.
